Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC)

Our experienced speech pathologists assess, trial, and train individuals in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems. We support adults and children with complex communication needs, collaborating with families, support networks, and professionals to create personalised solutions that empower confident communication.

What is Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)?

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to all the ways people can communicate without using spoken words. This can include gestures, facial expressions, eye pointing, vocalisations, sign language, and using symbols or communication devices. AAC supports individuals with limited or no functional speech to express themselves effectively.

  • Augmentative means to add to or enhance spoken communication. For example, gestures, eye pointing, and body language can help support speech.

  • Alternative means providing a substitute for spoken words. This could involve using sign language, pointing to symbols, or spelling out words on a communication device.

  • Communication is the process of sending and receiving messages between people.

AAC can be as simple as using a picture board or as advanced as high-tech devices with voice output. Whether it's used to enhance existing speech or as an alternative to speech, AAC helps people connect, share ideas, and participate more fully in their daily lives.

Types of AAC

AAC encompasses a range of tools and strategies designed to support or replace speech for individuals with communication challenges. These tools are typically categorised into two main types: Non Electronic Devices (Low Tech) and Electronic Devices (High Tech Devices).

  • These types of communication systems are non-electronic and often simple to create and use. They are cost-effective and can be customised to meet individual needs.

    'About Me' Books'

'About Me' books contain information on likes, dislikes, important people in your life, favourite activities, and how you like to communicate. This helps people to get to know you and helps you to develop positive relationships.

We all use calendars and diaries to help keep us organised and on track. Visual schedules use images or words to let people know their daily events, and help them move through tasks during the day.

These items include pictures, symbols or words that you can point to in order to express yourself.

Multiple communication boards can be combined into a single communication book, organised by topic. People can make selections on one page at a time, or combine messages across page.

Pragmatically Organised Dynamic Display (PODD) books are one common example of a low-tech communication book.

  • These communication systems offer features such as customisable vocabulary, voice output, and the ability to store and retrieve messages, enhancing communication flexibility and efficiency. Some AAC devices can include features like different ways to access computers (e.g to access emails or social media) and ways to control your home environment (e.g. turning on/off T.V., lights, etc.). Dedicated devices can be tailored to meet your needs. There are various software options (i.e. programs or apps) and devices with different features available. Symbols, written words, or photos can be used to represent different words and meanings.

These devices use printed symbol overlays manually added to the device. Each symbol has a recorded voice message that plays when pressed. They're ideal for those who struggle with dynamic displays, want multiple communication tools, or are learning basic choice-making.

These devices usually have a touch screen. They can be set up with multiple pages for different messages or words, using photos, symbols, or text. Selecting an item can bring up a new page, and pressing a symbol, photo, or word triggers a stored voice to read it aloud.

People can communicate by typing their message. The device can then speak the message. These systems support those with strong reading and writing skills and offer features like word prediction and phrase storage.
