Assistive Technology Explained

What Is Assistive Technology?

Assistive Technology (AT) refers to any equipment, device, software or system that helps a person do things more safely, independently or comfortably in everyday life. AT supports people with disability, older adults and anyone who needs practical solutions to participate fully at home, at work and in the community.

Assistive technology can support many areas of daily life. Here are some common ways it can help.

How Assistive Technology Helps

  • If you find it hard to get up from a chair, sit comfortably for long periods, or maintain a safe seated posture, assistive technology can provide the support you need. Solutions might include specialised seating, cushions, or lifting aids designed to improve comfort and reduce the risk of injury or strain.

  • Tasks like showering, dressing, grooming, or toileting can become more difficult with age or changes in health. Assistive technology offers practical tools such as grab rails, shower chairs, dressing aids, and more, that make it easier and safer to complete these essential daily routines while maintaining your dignity and independence.

  • Whether you’re finding it harder to walk long distances, maintain your balance, or manage steps and slopes, assistive technology such as walking frames, wheelchairs, or mobility scooters can support you to get where you need to go safely and independently.

  • Daily tasks like holding cutlery, lifting a cup, or opening jars and containers can become frustrating when mobility or grip strength is reduced. AT devices like adapted kitchen tools, non-slip mats, or ergonomic utensils can help you enjoy mealtimes with less stress and more control.

  • If you're living with vision or hearing loss, or finding it harder to interpret text and symbols, assistive technology can offer support through magnifiers, talking devices, hearing amplifiers, or screen readers. These tools can enhance your ability to interact with your environment and stay informed.

Examples of Assistive Technology

Assistive technology includes a wide range of tools and solutions. Common categories include:

  • Aids for daily living

Modified utensils, dressing aids, adapted hygiene tools, page turners and more.

  • Sensory aids

Magnifiers, large print screens, hearing aids, visual alert systems, Braille devices and speech output tools.

  • Seating and positioning

Supportive seating, cushions, standing frames, positioning belts, wedges and braces.

  • Mobility

Manual and powered wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, canes, crutches and vehicle modifications.

  • Recreation

Adaptive gaming controls, audio description, adaptive fishing rods, paddling cuffs and accessible sports seating.

  • Home modifications

Ramps, lifts, bathroom changes, widened doorways, automatic door openers and other structural adaptations.

  • AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication)

Speech generating devices, communication software, voice amplifiers and symbol based communication tools.

  • Prosthetics and orthotics

Artificial limbs, splints, braces and other supports that replace or enhance body function.

  • Computer access

Alternative keyboards, touch screens, voice to text software, switches, head pointers and specialised software.

  • Environmental controls

Systems that allow people to control appliances, lights, doors or phones using switches, voice, eye gaze or other access methods

Why Professional Support Matters

Choosing the right assistive technology is essential. Research shows that around 30 percent of AT is abandoned when the wrong item is selected or when people do not receive enough support after it is delivered.

Working with a qualified health professional helps ensure:

  • The AT fits your needs and goals

  • You can trial different options

  • You receive training and support

  • The solution works in your daily life

  • You get the right documentation for funding
