Alternative Access

Alternative access helps you use technology in the way that works best for you.

If standard controls like touchscreens or keyboards are difficult, we explore different tools, methods and setups to make devices easier and safer to use. Our occupational therapists work with you to find the most comfortable, effective and accessible way to control your technology.

What is Alternative Access?

Alternative access means using a different method to control or interact with technology when standard inputs aren’t suitable. This may include:

  • Joysticks

  • Switches

  • Eye gaze

  • Voice control

  • Alternative keyboards or mice

Alternative access is part of our broader Assistive Technology services, supporting you to use devices in the way that works best for you.

It can also involve positioning your body or device to reduce fatigue, pain or strain.

Alternative access is commonly used for:

  • computers and laptops

  • tablets and smartphones

  • communication devices (AAC)

  • smart home technology

  • powered wheelchairs

  • environmental controls
