Every day, we use our voices, expressions, gestures and devices to share ideas, ask for what we need and connect with the people around us. But for many Australians, communicating a simple thought or being understood isn’t always easy.

Speech Pathology Week ran from 23 to 29 August, and this year’s theme Communication Creates Possibility highlighted that communication is more than talking. It’s how we build relationships, make choices, learn, work and participate in our communities.

When people receive the right communication support, new possibilities open up. Confidence grows. Independence strengthens. Everyday life becomes more accessible and more meaningful.

Why Communication Support Matters

Communication is a human right. For people living with communication difficulties, early and appropriate support can make a significant difference to wellbeing, independence and participation.

Speech pathologists support a wide range of communication needs, including:

  • Speech clarity - Helping people produce sounds clearly so others can understand them

  • Language and literacy - Building vocabulary, comprehension, reading and writing skills

  • Social communication - Supporting conversation skills, social cues and relationship building

  • Fluency - Helping people who stutter communicate more smoothly

  • Voice - Supporting vocal quality, strength and projection

With the right support, people can express themselves more confidently and participate more fully in everyday life.

AAC and Assistive Technology: Creating New Ways to Communicate

For many children and adults who have difficulty speaking or being understood, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) provides a reliable and empowering way to communicate.

There’s a common misconception that AAC stops people from learning to speak. In reality, AAC often encourages language development, builds confidence and supports independence.

AAC tools range from simple, low‑tech options to advanced electronic systems.

Low‑Tech AAC

These tools don’t require electricity and are easy to use in everyday environments. Examples include:

  • Communication boards and books, including PODD

  • Visual schedules

  • “About Me” books that help others understand a person’s preferences and communication style

High‑Tech AAC

These systems run on tablets, smartphones or specialised speech‑generating devices. They may include:

  • Communication apps

  • Static or dynamic display devices

  • Text‑based systems that speak typed messages

  • Symbol‑based systems using pictures or icons

For people who cannot touch or point to a screen, alternative access ensures communication remains possible. Options include:

  • Eye‑gaze technology

  • Switches

  • Head tracking, joysticks and voice control

These tools allow people to communicate independently and in ways that feel natural to them.

LifeTec’s AAC Support

LifeTec has been supporting Queenslanders for more than 47 years. Our speech pathologists have extensive experience in AAC and alternative access, helping individuals find communication tools that genuinely fit their needs.

We support NDIS participants, families, carers, support coordinators and allied health professionals through every stage of their communication journey.

Professional Mentoring and Training

LifeTec also provides mentoring for speech pathologists who want to build their AAC skills, along with workshops for universities, support workers and community organisations.

Celebrating Our Speech Pathologists

Although Speech Pathology Week has finished, we want to recognise the incredible speech pathologists across Australia who make a meaningful difference every day. You step into clinics, homes, schools and communities with compassion, creativity and a commitment to helping people communicate in ways that feel authentic to them.

Your work supports people to find their voice, whether that’s through speech, signs, symbols, text, AAC or alternative access. You create connection. You build confidence. You open doors to participation, independence and possibility.

To every speech pathologist: thank you for the expertise you bring, the advocacy you champion and the care you show to individuals, families and communities across the country.
